Subcontractor Default Insurance (SDI) “Strategies”

4 Sight RMS Qualifications

Subcontractor Default Insurance (SDI), also known as Subguard, is an alternative for prime contractors to subcontractor and supplier bonding programs.  SDI has been growing in use by prime contractors since 1995.  There are now three insurance companies offering this product, Zurich, Arch and XL.

4Sight Risk Management Strategies LLC contributions to and experience with SDI date back to the product’s creation in 1995.  Our involvement comes from the perspective of underwriter, Broker and Contractor.  Positioned as Underwriting Executive at Zurich NA, we were part of the team that developed Subguard.  As a broker, our experiences include managing an international team of persons dedicated to servicing SDI clients.   And as the Risk Manager of one of the largest Construction Companies in the USA, we managed a SDI program as part of our overall management “Strategies”.

Among an extensive list of SDI “Firsts”, we put together the first SDI Captive Insurance Company, the first Advance Agreement for SDI under FAR, and the first “Duel Insured” SDI program (where the prime contractor was the insured for the risk of subcontractors defaulting and the Project Owner was the insured for the risk of the prime contractor defaulting), and the first SDI “Bid Bond” endorsement.
